The Tesla Model Y was a force in the 2023 and 2024 car market. However, 2025 is a new year, and it comes with an updated version of the Tesla Model Y. Now, the Model Y Launch Edition is available for delivery today to buyers. However, after collecting orders for months, Tesla has enough interest for around two weeks of deliveries.

Tesla wants buyers so bad it will bring you a new, facelifted Model Y ‘Launch Edition’ today

The Tesla Model Y Launch Edition is here. It’s a new lease on life for the wildly popular EV SUV. However, the EV brand is already running into issues with the facelifted, updated Model Y. Most notably, Tesla’s website suggests that the new dual-motor, all-wheel drive “Launch” series is available for some limited deliveries today.

It points to a softer demand for the updated Model Y than CEO Elon Musk had previously anticipated. A glance at the numbers explains some of why the new Launch Edition isn’t resonating with would-be buyers. For starters, the Model Y starts at $59,990 for the fully-loaded Launch Edition. That’s a tough sell.

The more affordable Long Range RWD and AWD models aren’t yet available. Worse yet, the brand’s public image has been sporting something of a black eye recently. Musk’s personal antics and government influence elicited nationwide protests, including an upcoming Tesla Takedown “Global Day of Action.”

Not even an inside and out facelift will put the Model Y on par with last year’s sales figures

Last year, the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling EV in the United States. And not by a slim margin, either. Americans bought an estimated 405,900 Model Ys, around 260,800 more than its smaller sibling, the Model 3. The substantial figure also puts the electric SUV in the No. 4 spot for all American vehicle sales in 2024, regardless of segment.

However, the fielding of the new, updated Model Y will almost certainly deliver fewer units in the first quarter of 2025. Still, the electric automaker’s investors are hopeful that the Model Y’s popularity will improve sales figures in Q2, Q3, and Q4, per Electrek.
