Have you ever needed to plug something in to charge and thought it was too much work? Well, Hyundai understands the struggle. If you’re too lazy to plug an EV in, a robot will do it for you. This way you can just park and walk away.
Hyundai will plug your EV in for you
As cars get smart, Hyundai is working to make things more convenient as well. If you’ve ever gotten out of an electric vehicle and thought that plugging it in was a hassle, now you can relax.
There is a robot that knows how to plug in EVs for drivers. The Korean automaker partnered with South Korea’s Incheon International Airport to commercialize its robot EV charger.
Instead of imagining a robotic humanoid figure, think of the robot as a mechanical arm. It figures out where charging ports are on trucks, cars, and SUVs then plugs charging cables in. Plus, the robot will ensure that the vehicle is paired with the correct cable.
According to Popular Mechanics, the Automatic Charging Robot (ACR) is using deep learning to find charging ports, so it’s working to narrow the margin of error as it prepares for future use.
Plus, the ACR can flex and move with your electric car to ensure that the cable is removed before you drive away. This could reduce the amount of EVs that accidentally rip out cables when drivers leave EV chargers. Other companies are developing breakaway cables.
A handful of charging stalls at the airport have the robots equipped. If testing goes well, they could spread to more locations.
